The Chocolate Diaries Book Review

Thanks to Blogging for Books and WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing group I had the opportunity to review the book “The Chocolate Diaries” by Karen Linamen.

Who doesn’t love chocolate? I know I love chocolate. This book contains many sweet little tips, stories and just recipes to use in your life. We all know that life isn’t perfect. It is hard and if we rely on God we can overcome many things. Oh and don’t forget a little bit of chocolate on the side.

This book has many stories of how people have triumphed over different things in their lives. From being divorced, losing a loved one, and even a person who over comes being blind and does some amazing things such as climb a few different mountains.

This book has inspired me to set goals and go for those sweet things in life that I have always wanted to do. I also must remember it can’t be done alone. God is there by our side and so are our friends.

I recommend grabbing a good piece of chocolate or two and read the wonderful stories in this book. I am sure you will be inspired too.

The Chocolate Diaries can be purchased on Amazon.com for $11.89.

* Note I did receive this book for review purposes. I was not paid for my opinion of the book.

Family Friday

It's Friday! Time for Family Friday! So we have had a busy week this week. Going places and keeping busy. We have some very exciting news this week. Yesterday my sister in law had her very first baby! So my husband is a first time uncle. Although he still counts my nieces and nephew as his. I have been an aunt since I was 2!

I was hoping this Friday I would have soccer pictures to post. Nope because of so much rain I don't have any. So I am hoping next week. Instead I have picked a few pictures from my phone to post. They are not the best but still cute.

My 2 year old in a hat :)

My 9 month old eating a tomato. He liked it. He only took a few bites.

Trick or Treat Thursday

Does anyone else love Halloween as much as I do? If you do be sure to check out Trick or Treat Thursdays! I will be posting crafts, recipes, and all other spooky things related to Halloween. Feel free to share your spooky stuff too!

1 new rubber surgical glove
2 quarts apple juice
2 quarts cranberry juice
2 liters ginger ale

1. Rinse the glove inside and out several times with cold water to make sure it doesn’t have any powder coating. Fill with water and tie the wrist tightly closed with a twist tie. Freeze solid.

2. Mix the juices and ginger ale in a large punch bowl. Cut the glove carefully off the hand and fingers with a sharp scissors and float the molded hand in the punch.

Of course, for some people costumes and food are beside the point. For them, it’s all about the trick-or-treat candy—and they’re willing to get it by any means necessary.

* I will probably just do a red kool-aid.

Preserve your jack o lantern

  • Mold and dehydration are the two main contributors to pumpkin rot. Prevent both by covering the carved areas and interior of pumpkin with petroleum jelly. This will keep the pumpkin from drying out and will slow the growth of mold.
  • Another option is to add a small amount of bleach to a spray bottle filled with water. Spray the pumpkin daily with the bleach mixture; the bleach fights mold while the water keeps the pumpkin from drying out too quickly.
  • Spray the pumpkin with a store-bought pumpkin preservation spray. Make sure that it is environmentally-friendly and nontoxic. Note: Even with these precautions, a cut pumpkin will only last for a few days to a week, so it's best to cut your pumpkin no earlier than a few days before your Halloween festivities.

Guest Post: It's all about me Jen

Today my guest post comes from It's all about me Jen. I found Jen's blog through a blog hop not too long ago. Jen's blog is great I love reading it and this post she wrote for me is just wonderful! If you ever wanted to know what it is like to be an empty nester then this is a great read. Also please make sure to stop by her blog and follower her if you like :)

I as a mother was never in a rush to see my kids grow up. I am aware of many women who want to dash from one milestone to get to another. I say to them “please slow down and enjoy every single minute of your children’s lives because you’ll never get those moments back.”

I was twenty-one when I laid eyes on my first of my three children, with their big brown eyes and wispy bangs, my heart just melted and I was done! I have always had a strong maternal instinct, been a nurturer, so becoming a stepmother was a no brainer for me. My husband and I had two boys together expanding our family making it two girls and three boys.

My years like most mothers were filled with the bustle of school volunteering, homework, sports, and having major bleacher butt, driving carpool, PTO and baking whatever whenever the school called. Time just seemed to fly by however and before I knew it the kids were driving, dating and working part time during the summer or on weekends and then poof they were preparing for college.

There is ten years difference between our oldest daughter and our youngest son so the transition from a house full of kids to an empty nest was a slow one and not quite as difficult as I had heard it would be. Our girls commuted to a local college and lived home for a time before leaving the nest.

Our oldest daughter was the first to move out, she’s bright and independent and it came as no shock when she came to us with the idea. Then our oldest son enlisted in the military that made him number two to leave. That was followed by our other daughter who moved out soon after finishing college. Then last but not least it was college and jobs for the younger sons.

It was an interesting transition for me as a mother with my nest empty; I had in fact never spent a single day of my married life not being a mother with kids at home. I had never worked so my whole married life had been dedicated to the children, starting on the day I married my husband; I was a full time mom. I, like many women tended to think of myself as mother first before woman or wife, so adjustments needed to be made for me emotionally.

You see I did a lot of things for my children because they were children and they needed me. What I learned after they left was that I needed to let go of the idea that they were still children. That they didn’t need me quite the way they did when they lived at home. So when I wanted to jump in and do something for them I’d ask myself this question “am I doing this for them or am I doing it for me?” That need I was feeling ‘to mother’ them never quite goes away but I needed to transition into treating my kids like the adults they were and not like the children they used to be.

When the last of our children finally moved out and my husband and I were finally free to be alone for the first time in twenty five years and to say the least, it was a bit of a shock to our systems. O.K I admit we had a bit of a honeymoon (we’re all adults here right?) We enjoyed our new found privacy very much, which included no worries about open doors, closed doors or ears that resemble ours hearing our conversations. Now we could come and go as we pleased any time of the day or night. Weekend trips are normal for us now; spur of the moment is not a problem.

We made a promise to take a yearly vacation just the two of us just to be “together” and we’ve done that all but one year. We’re going to Barbados this November for this year’s trip to a lovely all inclusive resort. Yeah!

One funny little adjustment I continue to have difficulty with is cooking for less than seven people; frankly I’ve never gotten that down!

We took on some overdue projects around the house that we never had time for, or the money for. A bathroom remodel was my favorite, I loved doing that bathroom and planned it all myself. What fun it was working with the contractor planning and shopping for all the fixtures and picking paint.

Other mothers have asked me if it was difficult seeing the kids move out and I’d be a big fat liar if I said it wasn’t. It takes time to get used to not seeing them every day, and I worry. But part of my job as a parent was to prepare them for adulthood so that they’d be able to leave with confidence and the fact that they did, made me feel kinda good, like maybe I was OK at this mother gig.

I’d like to thank Terri for asking me to guest post today on her blog Mom’s Point of View. I was so excited when she asked that I started to write it the minute we decided on a topic. This is my first guest post ever so I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Terri has been a generous and gracious host and I hope that if you’re visiting from my blog you'll show her some love, say hello, leave a comment or follow her blog.

I’d like to conclude with a few examples of what I call “the language of the empty nest”. Now that my children are out of the house, responsible for their finances and realize that our lives don’t revolve around them 24/7 and that we actually have a life, their communication skills have taken on some fun traits.

Phone rings -“Hi Mom I was thinking of coming home for dinner what’s cooking, oh meatloaf great see you later."

(What he’s really saying is)" Hi Mom I’m coming home for dinner and bring my ironing- you’re the greatest iron-er in the world, your meatloaf is the best, I hope there’s Heineken in the fridge because all I can afford is PBR with my paycheck, make up the guest room because I’m bringing my jammies!"

Phone rings-" Hi Mom I was just talking to the boys and they miss you and Dad soooo much." In the background I then hear my three grandsons saying, "we looove you grandmaaa!"

(What she’s really saying is) "Hi Mom we are so tired from working and taking care of the boys that we’d love if you’d offer to take the boys for the weekend so we can have some grown-up time….pppplease!"

My empty nest has afforded me the ability to read minds, isn't that great?! Why couldn’t I have that ability when they were home!?

Family Friday

Yes it is Friday!!! It is time for Family Friday!

Well as you can see by the pictures we recently went and played putt putt. We went Monday evening and there was only one other family there. It is always so nice to get out and do something with the kids. All of us love playing putt putt.

So I had a pretty awesome week. The kids did not complain about doing their homeschooling. No tears shed. (math has been hard for my daughter) The house got cleaned with no complaints and we had some friends over last night for dinner. What a great week!

So how was your week? What is something your family likes to do together?

Tasty Tuesday on Thursday: Peanut Butter Snow Balls

I am doing Tasty Tuesday today because I had my 100th post Tuesday :)

Peanut Butter Snow Balls

So last Thursday for my lia sophia party I made these tasty little things. Oh so yummy! If you like peanut butter and white chocolate this is a great recipe for you. Also only 4 ingredients!

What you need:

1 cup of confectioners sugar
1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter
3 tablespoons butter, softened
1 pound white chocolate chips

Directions:

In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, peanut butter and butter; mix well. Shape into 1 inch balls and place on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Chill for 30 mins. or until firm.

Meanwhile, melt the chocolate in a double boiler or microwave safe bowl. Dip balls in chocolate and place on wax paper to harden. Makes about 2 dozen.

* I double the recipe to make more when I have a little get together. I also love to make these and give them to my neighbors for Christmas.

Guest Post: A Mad Girls Love Song

Today our guest post comes from A Mad Girls Love Song. Sean Marie is a lovely mommy to be and I am so glad that I got to meet her through blogging. When you get a chance please check out her blog.

Hi there! I’m Sean Marie, a wife and mama to be growing more and more everyday- both physically and spiritually. I’m excited to have a guest post here on Terri’s blog! I love any opportunity to talk about pending motherhood and my personal journey because this is such a new and exciting time in my life. Even before conception begins, most women have expectations of what to anticipate when they do become pregnant. These assumptions are usually based off of the typically portrayed pregnant woman. Tired, mood swings, and definitely weird cravings. I’m here to tell you about my own expectations vs. reality.

The first few months: My first pregnancy symptoms didn't raise any questions in my mind because they were typical of those that came along with my "monthly gift". Sore breasts, cramps, and very crabby. My husband and I had started trying for a baby just a few short months before and I was eager to take a pregnancy test despite being certain at any moment I would begin my menstrual cycle. I took a test and it was positive! I was so excited about the news but knew there was a long road ahead. I expected to be nauseous and to have morning sickness since this is very common in the first trimester. I actually never got sick once but did have some trouble with nausea. All those symptoms lasted only a couple of weeks though. Instead of just thinking I was lucky I thought something was wrong when they disappeared and called my doctor, frantic. Even with all the reassurance in the world the paranoia didn’t subside. Within weeks of each other I was calling my doctor again and again, constantly thinking there was a problem and going in for an exam. Each time everything was okay and I was relieved.

The second trimester: After the first trimester was over I started to feel better and the delusions passed for the most part. All I could think about was marking the days off of the calendar to my big sonogram appointment when we would find out the baby’s sex! My intuition told me that we were going to be having a baby boy. In fact, I felt so sure of this that I almost accepted this idea as being factual. Not that I didn’t know it was a possibility but when the sonographer let us know it was a girl I was pretty surprised. The thought of a little girl made my heart melt and I cried tears of joy as I looked at the black and white image of my daughter on the ultrasound machine. I’ve always been very emotionally sensitive and believed pregnancy would only intensify things. Not only did I think I would be more weepy but I thought I would turn into a hormonal she-devil. I have found quite the opposite though. I am actually a lot more relaxed as far as my personal relationships go. I think it has to do with me realizing what’s important in life and letting go of all the little stuff that I used to be so engulfed with before.

The third trimester: Technically I have only been in the third trimester for a few weeks but it seems like the time up to this point has flown by. I thought I was in for a much longer, bumpier ride. I still have ten more weeks to go and have my outlook on what the next few weeks will be like. I know the last trimester is the hardest for a lot of women because they’re so uncomfortable. My belly takes up a lot of space and like I said, I am growing more and more everyday. I can feel the weight of my little girl pressing on my organs, muscles and spine. I occasionally get very minor heartburn, am exhausted 90 percent of the time, have some new stretch marks and am ashamed to say that I’ve peed myself more times then any grown woman should. All in all this has been a really great experience that has changed so much. I really look forward to becoming a mother and meeting the little one who has been growing along with me.

So, what were your expectations while expecting?

Family Friday

It's Friday and it's time for Family Friday! I have had a pretty good week. Busy with homeschooling and yesterday I had a jewelry party with one of my friends who does lia sophia. I found out that my 5 year old would be really good at selling jewelry. I had a party with my friend a few months ago and he remembered what was old and he could tell you what was new. He was so funny. I guess he is preparing for his future wife. He already proposed with a candy ring to a little girl he has been in love with at church for a few years. She turned him down every time but finally told him yes. The candy ring must have done the trick.

My baby had his 9 month check up Monday and is 22 lbs 10 ozs and 29 3/4 inches long. He is also starting to get himself into trouble. His new trick is climbing the stairs. He thinks it is so funny. We do have a gate to put up but I forget sometimes. Here is a picture of him with me following behind him.

My daughter also had a check up this week. She has 20/20 vision which makes me very happy because both my husband and I wear glasses. She is in the 75th percentile for height and weight.

My other booger who is 2 is just as wild as ever. He somehow managed to do a flip off of a speaker or whatever my husband has on the floor. Now he didn't mean to flip and you could tell from the stunned look on his face. Poor thing! He was ok. No boo boos at all because he did a perfect flip off of it. Maybe he will become a stunt double!

Oh and I don't think I have mentioned but my oldest two are starting up soccer next weekend. This is their 3rd season so you will see a lot of soccer photos on Family Fridays!

So how was your week? I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

TheraBreath Review and Giveaway

I recently had the chance to review a few products from TheraBreath. Last week I received the TheraBreath Tooth Paste, TheraBreath Oral Rinse and TheraBreath Mouth Wetting Lozenges.

Are you someone who suffers from bath breath or know someone that does? Sometimes having bath breath or knowing a person who does can be a very touchy subject. I know I have pretty bad morning breath. My husband also suffers from bath breath mainly because of tonsil stones.

So what can you do to help with bad breath? You can start with finding products that will help you out. So here are a few products that I was able to try.

TheraBreath Toothpaste:

Brush with this toothpaste twice a day and you will stop bad breath, guaranteed! This formula is also great for gum health and nothing is more powerful at fighting cavities. Therabreath Toothpaste is designed to control the anaerobic bacteria that causes bad breath.

I have now have been brushing with TheraBreath Toothpaste for a week. This toothpaste has a baking soda taste with a minty after taste. I know there are a lot of people out there who are thinking baking soda toothpaste?! Yuck! Really it isn't that bad once you use it more than one time. My husband wasn't much on the taste either but I think he was really impressed after one use how fresh my breath and his smelled. My teeth even felt cleaner.

TheraBreath Oral Rinse:

Stop your bad breath and end chronic halitosis by using TheraBreath Oral Rinse after brushing with TheraBreath Toothpaste. This amazing rinse uses the odor-obliterating power of OXYD-8 for treating bad breath, stopping halitosis and eliminating sour, bitter and metallic tastes in your mouth.

After using the toothpaste I used the TheraBreath Oral Rinse. It is recommended to use it 2-3 times a day. So what did the rinse taste like? It tasted like rinsing with water. The rinse also had a minty after taste. I asked my kids to smell my breath and tell me what they thought after I brushed and used the mouth wash. They said my breath smelled like minty gum. That was a good enough answer for me. Those two love gum!

TheraBreath Mouth Wetting Lozenges:

Our unique Lozenges are unlike any breath mint you have ever tried. They work in three distinct stages to make sure your mouth is fresh, moist, and healthy. This three stage approach is not only unique, but incredibly effective at controlling dry mouth and bad breath odor.

Last I got to try the TheraBreath Mouth Wetting Lozenges. It is recommended that you use these lozenges whenever your mouth feels dry or you experience a bad flavor in your mouth. I believe these have a similar taste to altoids. It is a very strong minty taste that leaves your mouth feeling fresh. I usually pop one of these in my mouth when I have just ate something strong such as sour cream and onion chips. These are a good little lozenges to keep on hand when you are out and about. Just throw a few in your bag and pop one in your mouth when you need it. I personally am not a fan of gum so having mints on hand is a great thing for me.

So while reviewing the TheraBreath products I also learned something new. I have had some of those nasty little canker sores in my mouth before. Just recently my daughter who is 8 was also complaining of having one. I found out while doing this review that those nasty little sores are caused by sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS.
SLS is an ingredient that many toothpaste manufacturers include to create a foaming action in your mouth when you brush. It's actually SOAP. There is absolutely NO benefit to SLS, it just gives the impression that the toothpaste is doing its job — it's also used in many shampoos to create a similar foaming while washing. Sounds harmless right? Wrong. It has been proven in research that SLS is so harsh that it can damage the oral tissue that lines the inside of your mouth on a microscopic level. It also dries out your mouth. This can lead to (you've guessed it!) a canker sore.

Interesting right? We are brushing with soap! That is another great thing about TheraBreath it does not contain SLS. You learn something new every day they say. I certainly did.

So if you are looking for a product to help fight off bad breath then I recommend TheraBreath.
